Between 27th and 31st December, the 4th Middlesex battalion of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, were in the front line at Kemmel in Belgium. The conditions were awful. Heavy rain caused the trenches to collapse and it was so cold that 46 men were sent to hospital with frostbite. Added to all this misery was hostile enemy activity, mainly in the shape of artillery and snipers. 20 men were killed or missing, including John Walsh who was killed on 29th December. |
